The Surfboard Studio offers a range of courses to suit all levels of DIY surfboard shaping enthusiasts. We offer sessions for groups, institutions, business' and individuals. Our courses include complete DIY surfboard building to suit individuals wanting to build a board from foam to finish with no prior experience. We also cater to individuals wanting to specialise in the areas of shaping and glassing. The Surfboard Studio is proud to employ instructors that have contributed greatly to the Australian surfboard industry, with knowledge that stretches back to the inception of Australia's surfboard shaping history.
MAKE YOUR OWN BOARD
Saturday Group Courses
The Surfboard Studio offers the Make Your Own Board course for nearly the price of a brand new production board. Over two consecutive Saturdays, we provide you with all of the materials, tools and live instruction necessary to create a custom surfboard. Upon completion, the surfboard is yours to keep, and the lessons provide you with the ability and knowledge to shape and glass additional surfboards on your own, and go on to experiment with different elements of board building.
PLEASE NOTE
Suited to individuals wanting to build a board from foam to finish.
Maximum of 4 participants per course.
Saturday group courses are run once a month.
All courses are conducted at our shaping warehouse, The Surfboard Studio in Preston - 11 km from Melbourne's CBD.
MAKE YOUR OWN BOARD
Private 1-on-1 and Group Courses
We are now pleased to offer the option of doing a private Make Your Own Board Course for between 1 and 4 people, Monday to Friday, at our Preston or Torquay Studio’s.
In these courses we provide our students with all the equipment, materials, skilled instruction & expert guidance to create their own surf craft from start to finish – ready to hit the water! You are provided with the knowledge and practical experience to then go on and build additional surfboards on your own. With the guidance of our expert instructors, you will Surfboard Studio with your own beautifully finished surfboard – first time!
PLEASE NOTE
Suited to individuals, doubles or groups of 4 wanting to build a board from foam to finish.
Maximum of 4 participants per course for Preston Studio, and 1 person for Torquay Studio.
Private courses can be tailored to your schedule, and are conducted on weekdays.
Private courses require 2 x 8 hour sessions, and can be completed on two consecutive days or up to a month apart.
SHAPING ONLY COURSE
1-on-1


For the individual wanting to acquire the skills for surfboard shaping with no previous experience, The Surfboard Studio offers two specialty, 1-on-1 shaping courses on how to design and shape a surfboard. We provide detailed instruction of shaping principles and processes covering everything from familiarisation with the shaping bay itself, to tool choice and use, the benefits of hand shaping over CNC, plug installation, rough shaping, rail design, fine-tuning, and finish-sanding.
SHAPING COURSE - TYPE 1
This course teaches how to hand shape a surfboard from scratch - the old way. Starting with an electric planer, you will cut your own rocker line, hand-foil your rails and bottom curve. Choose from over 100 in-house templates with a broad selection of shapes.
SHAPING COURSE - TYPE 2
This course teaches how to hand shape a surfboard from a skinned blank - the new way. Starting with a skinned blank, which removes the outer layer and adds the rocker, you move straight to template assignment. The course specialises in how to hand-foil your rails and bottom curve. Choose from over 100 in-house templates with a broad selection of shapes.
PLEASE NOTE
This course is only shaping, glassing can be arranged through The Surfboard Studio.
GLASSING ONLY COURSE
1-on-1


This course is conducted 1-on-1 and is for the individual who wants to learn how to laminate a surfboard with polyester resins. The course modules are designed for people with no previous laminating experience and will provide detailed instruction of glassing principles and processes covering everything from the laminating bay itself to tool choice and use, the benefits of different materials and cloth, plug installation, sanding and various techniques and tricks of the trade. The duration of each class runs between 6 - 8 hours (dependant on how many extras you want on your surfboard).
