Make Your Own Board - Courses
The Surfboard Studio offers the Make Your Own Surfboard course for nearly the price of a brand new production board. Over two consecutive Saturdays, we provide you with all of the materials, tools and live instruction necessary to create a custom surfboard. Upon completion, the surfboard is yours to keep, and the lessons provide you with the ability and knowledge to shape and glass additional surfboards on your own, and go on to experiment with different elements of board building.
Make Your Own Board Course participants are invited to enjoy 20% off storewide at Zak Surfboards (excluding watercraft). If you want to pre-purchase any items, we can have them ready to go for you on completion of the course.
Sadly, due to the crazy year we've all had, we've made the tough decision to postpone our 2020 courses. We were hoping to get back in the Studio after restrictions eased, but the lockdown dragged on too long and now we need to get back in the Zak Surfboards store for our busy summer period.
All voucher expiry dates will be extended, and postponed 2020 bookings will be prioritised for '21 courses. We'll have the 2021 calendar and bookings up soon.
Prices for 2021 are:
Group Course $1375 pp (plus extras)
Private Course $1695 pp (plus extras)
Thanks for your continued patience and understanding while we've worked through the challenges of the year - we look forward to getting you guys back on the tools in 2021.
Gift vouchers are still available, and may be used for 2021 Group and Private Courses.
Please either email us on firstname.lastname@example.org or call Cress on 0438 416 733 for details.
We run our courses over 2 days - essentially 7 & 10 hour sessions. These sessions are run on Saturdays from 9am - 4pm and 7am - 5pm, requiring participants to attend 2 sessions to complete their surfboard. Maximum 3-4 students per course. If the dates below don't suit, consider booking a mid-week Make Your Own Board - Private Course for between 1-4 people.
HOURS: 9:00am to 4:00pm
Day One begins with the basics of surfboard design. You will also be familiarised with the shaping bay and all the tools and techniques used in the craft. We will lead you through the intricacies of shaping and design, including planning shapes, bottom contours, nose and tail, rocker lines, deck shapes and rail shapes. We will discuss fin and plug installation, including various theories around fin positioning on different boards, and how their placement may affect performance.
HOURS: 7:00am to 5:00pm
Day Two of the course will proceed into the glassing stage, where you will learn about various techniques and materials used in glassing a surfboard. Optional extras like adding logos and colours to your resin are done at this stage, before cutting your own cloth, mixing the resin and laminating your own board. Then on to sanding and pro-finishing, and you'll be ready to get it in the water!
